Due to recent technological advances and improved materials, there are now alternatives to silver (or amalgam) fillings. I no longer place silver fillings in my practice for several reasons.

The second is that large silver fillings are the cause of most fractured teeth. Over 95% of the time when a patient comes to my office with a broken tooth, that tooth has a large silver filling in it.

The third is that they simply are not cosmetic, and these days nobody wants a mouth full of metal. The tooth-colored filling is stronger than mercury silver fillings and they also seal the tooth to prevent leakage.

When teeth require small restorations, we can fill them in the office with a tooth-colored material (hard plastic) that is bonded to the tooth. If the filling is large, I prefer to use a tooth-colored porcelain inlay or onlay, which is custom-fabricated in the laboratory to fit the tooth and is permanently cemented in place. If there is a considerable amount of tooth structure missing, we must crown the tooth.
