Porcelain crowns in Fayetteville, NC

Dental crowns are tooth-colored caps that cover the entire tooth. Crowns are used to hide major flaws and discoloration, improve a tooth’s appearance, restore weak structures and cover dental implants. Your Carmel, IN dentist recommends crowns to:

  • Strengthen badly decayed or fractured teeth
  • Replace a large filling
  • Attach a bridge
  • Restore a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Improve tooth color, size and shape

The Procedure
Placing porcelain crowns involves more than one appointment. After consultation, decay is removed and your tooth is cleaned and prepared. Dr. Smith then takes a highly accurate impression or mold of the tooth. This mold is sent to a laboratory that creates the gold or porcelain crown. While you wait for the permanent crown to be made, you’ll wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth. Once ready, the porcelain crown is cemented to your tooth.
If performed by a skilled dentist, a crown will fit perfectly over the tooth, and the space between the crown and tooth is reduced to prevent decay. In partnership with Frontier Dental laboratory, Really Smile creates custom porcelain crowns that look just like the real thing. We use porcelain because it is extremely durable, it mimics the properties of real enamel, and it can be matched exactly to your natural teeth.
Pros and Cons
Crowns are very durable and can last a long time with proper care and maintenance. However, normal wear means that the crown may need to be re-cemented or replaced eventually. Crowns should be placed before the tooth is damaged to a point that it may fracture. If damage is so severe that the tooth must be extracted, bridges and dental implants can replace the missing tooth.

Each porcelain crown made at Pike Dentistry is a work of art. Contact Dr. Mark Pike today, at 910-864-2400 to make an appointment.
